Crossing the Atlantic in a slow way was always a dream of mine. But I was not a sailor. I had only ever had a couple of lessons on a lake - without wind! In 2015 I decided to join Girls for Sail on the ARC. I had never heard about this event before and I didn’t know there was a sailing school in the UK for ladies only – great I thought. So I started some research.
It did not take me long till I discovered, yes that’s what I want to do. You know when you have those weird stomach feelings? I had a good job as a paramedic in a busy city in Switzerland and still loved my work, but I won’t get retired on this work. It was time for something new after 15 years. I booked the whole way through from the ARC to the Christmas Sail , the Zero to Hero Yachtmaster Pro and a few fun sailing weeks as well - my favourites? Grenada Regatta week and the RORC Caribbean 600!
I quit my job, gave my car away and put all my private stuff in a cellar back at my family’s home. Six weeks later I was in Las Palmas ready for my first proper sailing experience on the ocean.
I did not just plan a holiday, I changed my whole life. I was sure that was my way to go and I was right. I had a fantastic half year with GFS. Not only did I have to massively improve my English, I also had to learn 'nautical' English! It was quite a challenge, but I had such good and passionate skippers and instructors all the time. I enjoyed the leisure times and regattas but also had to sit behind the books and do some serious hard studies!
In my opinion it is a great opportunity to learn and get into this world. My goal from the beginning was to step in and work in the sailing industry. And that’s what I am doing now. After an intense sailing summer and awesome mentors I'm back. GFS gave me the chance to be the first mate on Hot Stuff for the ARC 2016 and I loved it. And now I'm skippering the fun sail weeks here in the Caribbean around St Lucia. Big smile!
We're the UK's only RYA sailing school for ladies and have been teaching women to sail since 1999. Whilst we love sailing with mixed crews, we think learning to sail is a lot more fun when your strength, fitness and boat parking skills are not always the punchline to a bad joke!
Here are just a few reasons why you should choose to do your Yachtmaster with Girls for Sail:
