Girls for Sail is the only all-female RYA sailing school in the UK, running the full programme of practical and shore-based RYA sailing courses from our base here in Cowes. We are looking for a full-time, commercially-endorsed RYA sailing instructor (Cruising Instructor or Yachtmaster Instructor) to teach our wonderful customers and inspire a future generation of ladies to feel as passionate about sailing as we do!
In return, we offer a competitive rate of pay, branded GFS clothing, the opportunity of ongoing training, a fun, supportive environment and even the opportunity of working for us in the Med and Caribbean during the winter months. We have three rules in GFS - no shouting, no such thing as a silly question and we work as a team - always. If this sounds like your kind of company then we'd love to hear from you!
We're also on the lookout for commercially endorsed racers to skipper our race events and if you have lots of race experience and would like to work for us as a First Mate then do get in touch.
Give us a call or email us a copy of your CV if you'd like to come and work for us - we are super busy so ALWAYS have work available for good skippers and instructors!!
Girls for Sail is seeking an apprentice to join our team and train to be a sailing instructor! The ideal candidate will have a sailing/dinghy background but no experience is necessary to take part. You will be looking to develop your experience in order to become skipper in charge of your own yacht for Girls for Sail as you race/cruise around the UK & Caribbean circuits. You will be considering a career in the industry, perhaps as a sailing instructor, but definitely dealing with people and boats. The successful completion of our Internship / Apprenticeship will enable you to become one of our permanent full time RYA sailing Instructors for our future seasons in the UK and the Caribbean.
Mar-Sept UK based – RYA courses, onshore management of yachts to code, regatta mate & regatta support
Sept Yacht prep for offshore passages
Oct-Dec UK to Canaries delivery, ARC transatlantic
Jan-Apr Cruising and teaching from RYA courses + 4-5 racing regattas
May Antigua, Bermuda, Atlantic crossing to Cowes
June Yachtmaster offshore certificate UK
YOU will be – competent, reliable, flexible and dedicated. Above all you must be an absolute professional. Sailing can be tough - you will need to be flexible and able to solve problems as they arise. You need to be quick thinking and practical and willing to get stuck in to any task.
Attitude is more important to us than qualifications.
* We do not plan for you to be on the boat for every racing event but will ensure you are on the right event that gains you the experience you need to become an instructor at the end of the programme
We care about you personally. You will be looked after and mentored primarily by our qualified Cruising Instructors and previous apprentices.
You get hands-on experience. It’s still a whole lot harder for ladies to get into the industry. We understand this. You will have been ultimately responsible for a 40.7 foot yacht under many conditions and will have experienced being the second-in-command on RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper courses.
You will know all about yachts by the end of the programme! Your duties will also include maintenance of yachts to RYA/MCA standards. This means wherever you take your qualification you will speak with confidence about every part of a yacht from its sails (and how to look after them) to rudder bearings to engines – you will be learning about the yacht you live on and learning how to maintain them to be safe.
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain LOTS of sailing experience and a first-hand insight into what's involved in running a busy sailing business.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please get in touch now!
