About The Event

Practical sailing, navigation and safety training all complement each other and help to develop your skills as a sailor. Take this intensive 4 week course to give you an excellent start into yachting  - either as part of our YachtmasterPro programme, or just start with this package.

This course is MODULE 1 of our YachtmasterPro 1-2-3, our GFS professional sail training programme.

If you want to feel confident onboard and take charge, or you are looking to sail with your husband/partner or buy a boat then this course is ideal for you. If you are considering progressing to Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore in the future then this is really what you should start with. The package is an excellent place to start.

Your skipper is RYA qualified and you can take advantage of her knowledge, learning the basics of sailing, wind awareness, parts of the boat and of course how to sail it or concentrating on any particular areas you wish to practice. Whatever we do we ensure you'll be safe, have fun and gain an estimated 300 miles.

Start with pre course prepartion - Online RYA Day Skipper Theory

Then undertake 4 practical courses:

  • RYA Competent Crew Practical Course 5 days (100 miles)
  • GFS Competent Crew Plus skills and experience 4/5 days (100 miles)
  • Sailing skills weekend 2 days (40/50 miles)
  • RYA Day Skipper Practical Course 5 days (100 miles)

Included in the UK are 2 theory courses : RYA VHF Radio licence* & First Aid - 2 days

These are excluded in the Caribbean although these can be organised pre overseas visit - the price in Caribbean reflects these missing 2 elements

*Any exam fees are payable direct to examiner and not included in course price as indicated*

The Boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.

About St Lucia

St Lucia is located within the Caribbean islands off the south east of the United States of America. Famous for its white and black sand beaches, rum punch and culture. You're in for a treat here!
We'll take time to sail around each island before we head to the cultured towns, sampling the music, food and even getting to know the locals!

Girls for Sail will ensure we do everything possible to give you the best sailing experience!
