What the Girls Had to Say

"I came after having a very upsetting experience of  theory and was incredibly nervous. Everyone was lovely and made me feel very welcome, right from the initial phone call. Amazing - thank you so much! Not only have I got through the qualification, but you have helped me regain my confidence!"

Starts: 10am  Day 1   GFS Office at Sheperds Wharf Marina

Finishes: Ends 4pm Day 5

About The Event

We ensure all our courses are taught in a positive and encouraging way, giving you plenty of hands on experience and allowing you to learn and enjoy yourself at the same time!

Over the next 2 weekends your RYA qualified skipper will take you through the RYA syllabus for your course. As with the Day Skipper theory course, this is either a shore based  theory course  with an instructor OR you can use the learn at home package produced in conjunction with Ocean Training Online. You will cover offshore and coastal navigation, pilotage and meteorology to a far greater degree and you'll learn the rules of the road thoroughly. There are examinations at the end of this course.

You will also need to undertake the VHF Radio course - a one-day course leading to your VHF Restricted Operator's license. Although not mandatory until you reach this level, it's a useful course for all sailing enthusiasts and it's good fun too!  At this level you will also need a First Aid at Sea Certificate and as with the VHF certificate, whilst this is not mandatory until you reach the higher levels, but we believe it is must for all potential skippers.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.

Additional Info

This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.

The emphasis of Coastal Skipper is on developing higher levels of independence. The training moves away from the shorter passages of Day Skipper and starts looking at passages that require watch-keeping routines, crew management and the ability to pilot a vessel both day and night. With longer passages it is less likely that you will be familiar with the sailing area, so a higher level of overall navigational and pilotage skill is developed.

The passage planning process for coastal skippers begins to involve consideration of the requirements for offshore passages e.g. vessel equipment or the significance of meteorological trends. Coastal passages can easily be out of sight, and shelter, of land for a number of hours and span a series of weather forecasts.

The course is taught over 40 hours with three exam papers.
