Girls For Sail Verdict

An exciting week of exploration for any teenager. This week offers an excellent way to get every teenager off their iPad/Xbox/laptop and face the real world. Our teenage sail weeks are designed for all level of experience from total beginner to advanced.  Your daughter/niece will get the chance to sail around the Solent, experiencing the wind in their hair and the exhilarating rush of a sail under power all under the watchful eye of one of our female skippers

Starts: 10am @ the GFS office, Cowes

Finishes: 4pm, Cowes

It's time to get your teens off the Xbox and outside sailing!

This summer we are introducing the Teenagers Sail, available for all abilities - beginner to advanced.!  We will offer advice and teach them the basic skills of sailing, or for the more experienced help them understand how to navigate, helm properly and get their confidence boosted
By the time they arrive back home they'll be unable to stop chattering about their week - we hope!

 About the event:

A 5 day trip which aims to visit some lovely spots* around the Solent, all whilst teaching your daughter/niece the essentials in sailing on a larger boat. The exact itinerary will be dependant on the weather and tides but our aim is to give your daughter an enjoyable, educational and exciting week.

Your daughter's skipper is RYA qualified and she can take advantage of her knowledge, either learning the basics of sailing, wind awareness, parts of the boat and of course how to sail it or concentrating on particular areas they wish to practice. Your teenager can choose to be as involved as they wish, whether taking the helm, changing a sail, pulling on a few sheets or simply sitting back and enjoying the atmosphere!

What experience do I need?

None! This course is the perfect introduction to the wonderful sport of sailing and your daughter or niece is guaranteed 5 days of fun and laughter!

Alternatively, if your daughter already has her RYA Competent Crew and is over the age of 16 she could work towards gaining her RYA Day Skipper practical certificate* during the week.

She can come alone or with friends - most girls join on their own and we absolutely promise to look after them. Trust us, after just one day on board they'll have made new friends for life and won't want to leave the boat by the end of the week!

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet at 10am at the GFS Office, Shepherds Wharf Marina, Cowes. Your skipper will be onboard with the kettle on! Then you will have your full safety brief on the boat - set sail for a few practise drills. we will learn how to hoist the sails, and head out into the Solent to start learning about how the sails work. Tonight we will pick up a mooring buoy outside Yarmouth.

Day 2 -  A lot of information this morning, but don't worry, it will all sink in.  Today will put it into practice, repeating the lessons of the day before and incorporating more tacking and gybing. The short distance to Lymington optimises the time honing our new found skills, and learning more - its time for MAN OVERBOARD!! You will be meeting our very careless mate Bob! Its also time to learn some knots

Day 3 - A longer trip lined up today, after a hearty breakfast we will head out to the Western Solent, saying goodbye to the needles, we will head back to the central Solent using Osborne bay as a playground, learning more about sail setting. This evening will be your chance to teach your instructor a thing of two... presentations. These will be on anything from, how to send a MAYDAY, to where to find a forecast. Tonight we will end up in Haslar Marina, famous for being the best showers on the Solent... not to mention they're on a ship!

Day 4 - After eggs for brekkie, we will head out of busy Portsmouth harbour heading back to the comparable peace of the East Solent, taking a look at the Forts.  More training today, no rest for the wicked, what with that all important knots test coming up tomorrow! Ending our day in Cowes marina.

Day 5 - Today we will spend time polishing up anything that you wish to cover again. Before heading back into Cowes, to debrief, and clean up. You will depart the yacht at 4pm.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling it's resident population multifold.

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.
