About The Event

Have you just completed your RYA Day Skipper qualification or did you do it some time ago?  Are you lacking a bit of confidence at the thought of taking charge of a yacht and could do with a refresher?  This is the ideal course for you as it is designed to reinforce what you learnt in your Day Skipper and give you the confidence to take charge.

Your RYA trained skipper will create an itinerary based on weather and tides that allows you to visit some of the South coast's most beautiful ports (and also some of the most challenging!) whilst improving the sailing skills you already have.  There is no set itinerary or syllabus. Your skipper will assess your strengths and weaknesses and encourage you to develop.  There will be time to work on skills and drills, sail trim, manoeuvres, passage making, navigation and anything else you would like to do.  Stop for a swim, watch the sunset at anchor or go ashore for dinner and drinks.  Oh...and it's great fun too!

A 5 day trip which aims to visit some lovely spots on the South coast such as Poole Harbour and the Beaulieu River.  The exact itinerary will be dependant on the weather and tides but our aim is to give you a fun holiday whilst also building on your sailing skills through instruction from our RYA qualified skipper.

If you are looking to complete your Yachtmaster and need to gain some extra miles then get on board! This would be the perfect trip for you too!  Either way it'll be more miles to add to your log book and a lovely holiday while you're at it!

We meet Sunday night to get to know each other and the boat.  After breakfast onboard and the all important safety briefs we set sail the following day.

Your skipper is RYA qualified and you can take advantage of her knowledge,  learning more advanced aspects of sailing, wind awareness, passage making or concentrating on any particular areas you wish to practice. You can be as involved as you wish, whether taking the helm, changing a sail, pulling on a few sheets or simply sitting back and enjoying the atmosphere!  We encourage you to get the most of this time onboard but as there is no assessment at the end you can take a break and sit back and relax if you feel like it.

Sample Itinerary

Your skipper will set the itinerary taking into account the wind and tide and where you would like to go.  Sail out of the Solent past the magnificent and picturesque Needles and onwards to Poole Harbour.  Whatever we do we ensure you'll be safe and have fun.

Additional Info

Weather:

April to September usually sees fine sailing and a mix of weather conditions. Be prepared with sun-cream as well as fleeces!

Or for those who just need a little pick me up over a weekend, try our Fun Sail Weekend!!

The Boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling it's resident population multifold.

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.
