Girls For Sail Verdict

5 days of super sailing in different picturesque ports - build your skills and confidence and bridge the gap between RYA Competent Crew & RYA Day Skipper.

 What The Girls Said

First class! Indeed it was as calm a boat as advertised and that, in combination with learning while doing was for me absolutely the best way. I learned way more than I expected as we sailed in pretty windy conditions and Sophie was just brilliant at answering questions. Wendelin 2014

Starts: 10am at the Girls for Sail offices in Cowes

Finishes: Friday at 4pm in Cowes

About The Event

Get away from it all and build your sailing skills! You will return home completely rejuvenated. Your RYA instructor will be there to help you through anything you are unsure of and will coach you all the way. Use this week to practice elements from your Competent Crew or other general sailing weeks - start to incorporate some of the skills you will need as you work towards your Day Skipper such as introduction to chartwork, sail setting and awareness of crew positions. Your instructor is there to help you take in as much information as time allows! She loves to teach and enjoys watching new people learn the sport that she loves so much.

By the end of the week you will have built your confidence and have a clearer idea of your next steps - and worked out which one of the Solent harbours you will be coming back to visit (hopefully!)  These events are ideal for improvers and those who want to just get away for time out with a great company!

Your skipper is RYA qualified and you can take advantage of her knowledge during the week. The itinerary will depend on the wind and tide and the needs of each member of the group.  Whatever we do we ensure you'll be safe and have fun.

Other Activities:

In the evening there is usually a chance to go ashore to explore some of the beautiful villages and towns around the South Coast and Isle of Wight. We might spend the night discovering how the small town of Cowes reinvents itself after dark to become a hive of activity. The pubs and restaurants are excellent!

Details of the yacht

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts are 9/10 berth yachts with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Meet your crew at 1000 at the Girls For Sail office, before your full safety brief on the boat. A lot of information this morning, but don't worry, it will all sink in. After the safety brief, we will learn how to hoist the sails, and head out into the Solent to start learning about how the sails work. Tonight we will pick up a mooring buoy outside Yarmouth.

Day 2 - After digesting a lot of information yesterday, today will put it into practice, repeating the lessons of the day before and incorporating more tacking and gybing. The short distance to Lymington optimises the time honing our new found skills, and learning more - it's time for MAN OVERBOARD!! You will be meeting our very careless mate Bob! Its also time to learn some knots!

Day 3 - A longer trip lined up today, after a hearty breakfast we will head out to the Western Solent. Saying goodbye to the Needles, we will head back to the central Solent using Osbourne bay as a playground, learning more about sail setting. This evening will be your chance to teach your instructor a thing or two... presentations!! These will be on anything from how to send a MAYDAY, to where to find a forecast. Tonight we will end up in Haslar Marina, famous for having some of the best showers in the Solent... not to mention they're on a ship!

Day 4 - After eggs for brekkie, we will head out of busy Portsmouth harbour heading back to the comparable peace of the East Solent, taking a look at the Forts planned originally to protect from Napoleonic invasion, but sadly completed too late! More training today, no rest for the wicked, what with that all important knots test coming up tomorrow! Ending our day at East Cowes marina.

Day 5  - Today we will spend time polishing up anything that you wish to cover again. Then it's back to Cowes in time to debrief and clean up. You will depart the yacht at 4pm.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling it's resident population multifold.

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.
