About The Event

The JP Morgan Asset Management Round The Island Yacht race is here! The biggest one-day race regatta in the world, the challenging 60 mile course gives the opportunity for almost all points of sail as we circumnavigate the island. Taking place in early summer, there are plenty of sunlight hours to watch the fleet spread out over the longer straights and then converge at the pinch points from on board - right in the middle of the action.  You can be one of the crew.  No experience necessary.  We accommodate ladies of every level, competence and age and what's more, whilst we love to beat the boys and we aim to win, we do it in an environment which is fun and calm!

This special two day package is perfect if you can't spare an extra day out of the office by skipping the pre-race training day on the Friday. Join us in time for the race briefing instead on the Friday night, ready for your very early race start on the Saturday morning!

You don't need any previous race experience to join us on this two day event, though we do recommend that if you're a complete beginner to sailing then our three day race package might suit you better as you'll benefit from a full day of training before the race starts on the Saturday.

The Round the Island Race attracts up to 1,800 yachts to take part from around the globe, ranging from tiny dinghies right the way up to 100 foot super maxis and record-breaking trimarans and multihulls - it really is an experience of a lifetime racing alongside so many different boats and the adrenaline rush at the start is unbelievable!

Here's some footage from last year's race start to give you some idea of what to expect!

We spend the Sunday enjoying some more leisurely sailing around the Solent, possibly even dropping the anchor for a spot of lunch in the sun in Osborne Bay - after your exertions of the previous day you'll be glad of the chance to relax and soak up the post-race atmosphere!

The boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.
