About The Event

Come and race with us from beautiful Arrecife, Lanzarote to Virgin Gorda in the picturesque British Virgin Islands – the most amazing places with which to bookend this extreme challenge!

The next step up from the ARC (The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), this event will really push you to your limits! Racing against boats of all shapes and sizes (from 30ft to 100ft+, including well known boats such as Leopard – a famous Farr 100) with professional crews creates an intense competition that truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Racing across the Atlantic is a lifelong dream for many sailors – and what better way to do than in an all female crew with a dedication to safety and FUN! Our boats are inspected regularly to ensure they meet the RYA’s high standards of maintenance and will be checked repeatedly before the race to ensure they are eligible for an Atlantic crossing.

Our skippers are highly experienced women – one went on to be the Clipper’s only female skipper to win a leg and another has won the youngest skipper award for the ARC - multiple times – and has now been selected as a Clipper skipper.  Others are dedicated sailing instructors with thousands of miles of experience and are comfortable in even the most severe of conditions. With two of these exceptional ladies on board, at least one of which will have crossed the Atlantic before, we can guarantee you will be in good hands! You will be hard pressed to find a more accomplished set of coaches for your adventure.

With regards to safety equipment we have the best of the best for our transatlantic voyages. We have top of the range self-inflating lifejackets with hood; lifelines and harnesses; a deck mounted liferaft; EPIRB; grab bags; a satellite phone - and an enormous list of other safety items on board. We follow all of RORC’s guidelines to the letter – the safety of our ladies is paramount to us here at Girls for Sail. We like to ensure we are prepared for any eventuality!

The boat is fitted with a tracker before the race so our staff back at the office (and your loved ones) can keep their eyes on you!

The boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

Preparation

We meet the weekend that the race begins and from that point we start work on our preparation. We all get to join in with provisioning the boat and storing everything below decks to ensure that you know where everything on the boat This also means you feel at home and will be able to get to know each other before heading off on a multi-week journey with your crewmembers! We need an awful lot of food as it is one of the most important parts to the crossing - breakfast lunch and dinner mmmm.

Here we are doing the first part of the provisioning (right) - this is a team effort and one which you are encouraged to join in on!

Why choose Girls for Sail?

  • First of all we want to give you some freedom, we want you to feel absolutely able to do anything onboard, so we will greet you, make you feel welcome, confident and safe, and of course you won't have anyone rushing you! You can learn at your own pace with our skippers and feel the benefit of this in your handling of our yacht!
  • We pride ourselves on our levels of tuition.  There's no such thing as a 'silly' question!  There's no shouting onboard and as it's also your holiday, we want you to have fun and go home relaxed and satisfied with your time here! Not to mention you get to meet new lifelong friends!

Our values are simple: Encourage, Support, Challenge and Respect!
