What the Girls Had to Say

"My daughter and I went for a day sail with Oriel on Tuesday. As well as organising fantastic sunshine and some wind, we thought Oriel looked after us extremely well. She was very tactful with my daughter which we both really appreciated. Please thank her for us and many thanks to GFS for a lovely day out."

Starts: 7.30pm Friday,  GFS Office at Shepards Wharf Marina

Finishes: 4pm Sunday, Shepards Wharf Marina

About The Event

This two day fun sailing weekend is the perfect way to spend a couple of nights away with your mum, daughter, sister or auntie!

Imagine a pyjama party where you get to have a go at something you might never have done before, laugh your socks off all day long with your fellow all-girl crew and enjoy some great food and drink on the evening watching the sun set on another memory-packed day of sailing...

We'll provide a fully qualified skipper to keep you safe and look after you on board - she'll teach you the basics of sailing and give you chance to have a go doing everything on board, from steering the boat, pulling in the sails and tying up the boat when you arrive back in port. If you have more experience and would like to use the weekend to practice your skills and learn new ones that's fine - your skipper will ask you when you arrive what you're hoping to get out of the weekend and then tailor the next two days around you and your fellow crew.

You might find yourself sailing to beautiful Beaulieu for a relaxing spot of lunch at anchor...or peaceful Newtown Creek where if you're lucky you might see a seal or two lazing on the shore! On the Saturday night take your pick from dinner in the charming Georgian seaside town of Lymington, frequently voted the best UK place to live beside the sea - or perhaps you might fancy somewhere more lively, such as Ocean Village Marina in Southampton with its waterside bars. The choice is yours!

You'll leave us on Sunday afternoon feeling relaxed, revived and full of beans - sailing is a great de-stresser and all that lovely fresh sea air is great for the complexion too!

Suggested itinerary (for guidance only)

Friday evening - meet your lovely skipper and fellow crew at Shepards Wharf Marina in Cowes before heading down to the boat for a quick glass of wine and safety brief. Then we'll head to a local pub for that night's dinner and a chance to get to know each other better!

Saturday - wake up after your first night on board, feeling refreshed and excited about the day ahead! An onboard breakfast of bacon butties, cereals and toast will set you up for the day - or keep you going until elevensies at least! Your skipper will run through the basics on board and then it's time to head off for your first day of fun and adventure! We might head to the gorgeous but tidal Beaulieu River where we'll have chance to marvel at the fabulous, huge waterside properties - see how many private helicopters you can spot! Or the National Trust-managed nature reserve of Newtown Creek where if you're lucky you might catch some of our local seal population lazing around on the beach!

Dinner that evening will be at a local pub or restaurant of your choice - take your pick from elegant Lymington in the New Forest, or lively Ocean Village in Southampton. Or perhaps you might decide to head to Hamble, famous for being the setting for the 1980's TV drama, Howard's Way!

Sunday - after a great night's sleep (all that fresh air will make you sleep like a baby!) wake up to another hearty breakfast on board and a chat over the plan for the day. We might sail to the sheltered waters of Osborne bay in the shadow of Osborne House, the royal summer residence of Queen Victoria and now run by English Heritage. Or perhaps we'll head to one of the locations we didn't get chance to visit yesterday - whatever you decide, the focus is on fun, laughter and relaxation! Then sadly it's back to the marina in Cowes and after washing the boat down and packing up all your stuff from the weekend it's time to say your goodbyes and head home - but hopefully with a set of new sailing friends and plans in place to repeat it all over again sometime soon!

The boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.
