About The Event

The Garmin Hamble Winter Series run their exciting racing on Sundays from early October until the beginning of December in our back garden, the Solent!

After a hugely popular (and hilarious) campaign series in 2014, for 2015, we'll be doing a campaign deal for 3 weekends of training and racing. This is the perfect opportunity to learn all about racing- you can work through all the positions of a race crew, spending a weekend in each position.

These weekends are skippered by our fantastic RYA instructors. Providing you with the easy manoeuvres, excellent speed and of course a fun vessel to race with!

With this campaign you'll get the experience of a lifetime being able to race against some amazing teams, and of course you'll get to leave with the incredible stories you can make all your friends jealous with!

DATES FOR 2016:

Half A: 1st, 15th, 22nd October

OR

Half B: 12th, 19th, 26th November

The boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival

We will meet at the GFS Office in Cowes on Friday night at 19:30. You'll get to know your crew and all head out for meal together in a local pub. Unwind after a potentially stressful week, let your hair down with some live music or simply chill with some drinks in a bar. It's your party, as they say.

Day 2 -

Up and at 'em! It's training day on the solent. After a breakfast on board you'll be storming around the solent, learning race specific skills and drills. Together you'll get to know the boat, the sails and the tactics involved in a successful race.

Saturday evening you'll go for another crew dinner, perhaps in a restaurant and relax in time for the race tomorrow!

Day 3

It's an early start today! We'll cruise over towards Warsash for the start line, and see all the other competitors joslting for position. One or two races later (depending on the weekend) we'll head back to Cowes in time for the 1615 Red Jet!

Please allow for a later Red Jet, in light airs races take much longer- and we'd hate to have to retire!

Experience required

Competent crew level of experience. No previous racing experience is required, our skippers are more than qualified to get you up to scratch! Come and learn something new!
