About The Event

Calling all budding instructors

The  Cruising Instructor course is aimed at confident qualified Yachtmasters ready for the next step. The qualification allows you to teach RYA courses including Competent Crew and Day Skipper practical courses.  The five day course is a blend of assessing the candidate's knowledge, providing a structured framework to instruct, coach, observe and deliver constructive feedback and ensure the structure and standards required of RYA courses up to Day Skipper Practical are understood.

Over the week you will receive assessment and indepth tuition on:

  • Instructional Techniques
  • Boat and sail handling
  • Course and Lesson planning
  • Briefing and debriefing skills
  • Safety
  • Personal skills

Due to the short time available on this course, there is limited opportunity to fill any gaps in knowledge. Candidates must therefore ensure they have sufficient underpinning knowledge prior to attending this course/assessment.

Applicants must have a valid commercially endorsed RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence and must be proficient in diesel engine maintenance, radar and boat handling skills. On reaching Instructor standard you will be awarded your RYA Cruising Instructor endorsement which is valid for 5 years and allows you to teach RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper Practical Courses at any RYA Training Centre.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling it's resident population multifold.

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.

Preparation

Candidates have to complete the online pre-coursework and knowledge check before they start. An online login is provided to candidates a few weeks beforehand so that they have plenty of time to complete it.  We also require a copy of your sailing CV to send on to the Cruising Instructor Trainer on booking with us.
