About The Event

Inspired to give racing a go but thought it was something only professional sailors could do? Well think again!

Since 1826 Cowes Week has been a major fixture in the sailing calendar and is the largest and most famous sailing regatta in the world. Every year around 1,000 yachts and 8,500 competitors from all over the world head to the port of Cowes on the sunny Isle of Wight to take part in 8 days of adrenaline-packed racing on boats ranging from dinghies and one design yachts to multihulls and 100 foot super yachts. Competitors include world-class and Olympic yachtsmen and women and weekend leisure sailors.

The fun doesn't stop when the racing's finished for the day...quite the opposite! For one week in August, Cowes transforms itself into the party capital of the south coast - with a festival-like atmosphere and different events and parties happening every night you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to evening entertainment. The whole week concludes with a HUGE water-based fireworks display on the last Friday of Cowes Week - the sight of hundreds of boats at anchor watching the spectacle is a sight to behold indeed!!

Cowes Week offers some of the most exciting racing conditions within the compact and challenging Solent, which is as exhilarating to watch as it is to compete in. Cowes regatta extends over a magnificent 8 days and is not for the faint hearted! Serious racing is of course also accompanied by some serious socialising. Strong tides, erratic weather and 900 competitors, certainly make this a challenging event! There is always one day when you wake, turn your suntanned face up to the grey skies and wonder if are we really going to race in this?!! The infamous Cowes beer tent comes alive straight after racing as the crews come ashore to relax and swap stories over a few post race drinks. The fun is non stop and the buzz is really exhilarating. Cowes is a wonderful place in the sunshine. The small high street is a hive of activity during Cowes week with excellent restaurants and pubs which are all full of life and plenty of great 'yachtie' shops as well.

One of the social highlights is the final night fireworks on the Friday. An un-missable night out! In the evenings, there is a huge programme of entertainment with well-known bands featured on the main stage. And then, there’s the general socialising!! If you work it out...900 boats with an average of 10 people aboard that’s ....9000 wonder lil' ole Cowes is buzzing!! Sadly, it’s still exceptionally male dominated so the beer tents are still packed with happy chaps having lots of racing discussions!! There are a huge range of pubs, restaurants and even black tie dinners to attend so we can help coordinate the social programme to make sure the whole team are happy! Why not come along and join in? You can come on your own because you will be looked after by us girls! You are never alone on a Girls for Sail event.....especially if you wear your team shirt!

About the boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 people.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.
