What the Girls Had to Say

"Cowes week with Girls for Sail was the perfect combination of serious sailing and fantastic fun. There were some real pinch-yourself moments- I feel like I've achieved so much!"

Starts: 8am sharp @ the GFS Office, Cowes

Finishes: 1800 hours, Cowes

About The Event

Cowes week is the biggest regatta on the UK's sailing calendar, taking place at the beginning of August every year. The regatta has been in existence since 1826 and is a real Solent tradition. Cowes regatta extends over a magnificent eight days offering some of the most exciting racing conditions on the compact Solent waters. Strong tides, erratic weather and 900 competitors from around the world certainly make this a challenging event - on and off the water!

At Girls for Sail we develop our racing teams from Day 1. Your instructor will coach you and your fellow female crew mates, utilising the skills in the group so that you each contribute to the speed and safe operation of a yacht in a large fleet.  Our instructors work with a group of 8-12 ladies starting on training day and then proceed to coach you on your specific role as we head out to race against some of the best sailors in the UK. It is fantastic to be able to line up with the elite and compete as we tack and gybe our way around the complex courses set by the excellent race organisers.

Serious racing is of course also accompanied by some serious socialising and we ensure we attend as many of the off the water events as we have the energy for! Action packed racing, hundreds of yachts, thousands of competitors this event is a must on the annual calendar. Each evening our yachts moor up in our reserved berth in Cowes, so there is plenty of opportunity to get involved in the popular Cowes social scene.

THE COWES WEEK DAY SAIL is the perfect way to experience Cowes week when time is in short supply - but hurry! We only offer one place per day and they do get snapped up quickly!

Sample Itinerary

Arrive at 8am sharp at the Girls for Sail office, read to meet your fellow crew and learn what position you'll be racing in on board.

After a quick safety brief, you'll be heading straight out into the Solent ready for the start of that day's race!

If this is your first time racing, prepare for a MASSIVE adrenaline rush!! The sight of hundreds of yachts all racing at the same time is truly incredible.

There is just one race a day for the class we'll be racing in - but be prepared for it to last anything between 4-6 hours. Don't worry, there'll be plenty of time on the downwind legs to grab some food and all important drink - jelly babies anyone?!

And then before you know it you'll be back in the marina ready for the daily debrief and more importantly, some celebratory drinks! Then it's straight to the marina for some serious post-racing party action - or off to one of the many parties or events!!

The boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.
