About The Event

Whether you're training for a career in the sailing industry - or just looking to skipper your own yacht on longer passages then this intensive six week course is the perfect option! If you're already at Day Skipper level (or have at least 300 miles logged already) then you can join this programme and attain your RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate - or add on the optional exam at the end and achieve the MCA/RYA Yachtmaster Coastal which can be commercially endorsed for working in the industry.

This course is Module Two of our Yachtmaster Pro 1-2-3 professional sail training course.

Our Day Skipper to Coastal Skipper module is the largest section of the YMPro programme during which you'll build miles and experience, as well as undertaking numerous theoretical training sections. This section is less about skills/drills as learnt in Module 1 and more about hands on sailing experience and developing essential skippering experience as well as logging longer skippered passages.

Practical training includes: Sail trimming / Spinnaker handling and race techniques / Boat handling under sail and power / Passage planning / Navigation, port entry and pilotage / Passage making and skippered passages / Watch keeping / Safety and emergency drills / RIB (small powerboat) driving.

The theory syllabus covers: Passage planning / Yacht and crew preparation /Pilotage navigation and chart work / GPS and electronic aids / Meteorology / Tidal heights and streams/ Aspects of oceanography / Vessel stability / Safety equipment and procedures / Collision Regulations (IRPCS) / Racing rules and tactics

Specific courses are

GFS Day Skipper Plus Practical Course (5 days, 100 miles)

RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Theory shorebased course (6 days)

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical (5 days, 150-250 miles)

Elementary First Aid (1 day)

VHF Radio (1 day)

RORC Offshore race (if available) or equivalent (2-3 days, min 150 miles)

There are two additional courses that can be added (not included in the price of module two):

STCW Basic Safety Training
There are five elements to the STCW Basic Safety Training week: Elementary First Aid, Personal Survival Training, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Proficiency in Security Awareness.

(This shore-based course is essential if you are considering a professional career on yachts or motorboats in excess of 24m.)

Spinnaker training/Sail trimming & race techniques (2 days)

This two day course is really useful even for non-racers and strongly recommended if you are aiming for your Yachtmaster Offshore.

The YachtmasterPro 1-2-3 Training programme is suitable for experienced sailors and newcomers alike - please contact us if you need any advice or help!

The boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!
