Girls For Sail Verdict

The perfect way to practise and perfect those tricky mooring manoeuvres without undertaking a 5 day RYA course.  We'll practice the best techniques for manoeuvring under engine, look at what you can do to extricate yourself from tricky situations, and help you gain confidence at the helm like you've been doing it for years! There will be plenty of time to practise and ask questions - I'm sure you know by now that with GirlsforSail there's no such thing as a silly question!

What the Girls Had to Say

“It’s like this course was tailor made for me! I’m a perfectly confident sailor but when it comes to those close quarter manoeuvres I’d rather someone else took over. BUT NO LONGER! Thanks GFS!”

Starts: 10am @ the GFS office, Cowes

Finishes: 1600hrs in Cowes

About The Event

Have you taken your Day Skipper but need a bit of a refresher?

Do you need to gain more confidence at the helm while going into marinas?

Are you feeling apprehensive about taking the leap from Competent Crew to Day Skipper?

Perhaps you own your own boat but your hubby does all the work normally?

Well the aim of this course is to help to answer all these questions and to give you the confidence to take charge and make sure everyone remains safe.

We'll practice the best techniques for mooring, look at what you can do to extricate yourself from tricky situations, and help you gain confidence at the helm like you've been doing it for years! There will be plenty of time to practise and ask questions - I'm sure you know by now that with GirlsforSail there's no such thing as a silly question!

Your Girls For Sail skipper is a qualified RYA instructor, and a bloomin’ good one at that! She’ll take you through the tips and tricks of the trade and get you handling a boat under engine like a real pro.

Your day will mostly be under power, as we “pontoon bash” until you feel truly confident you could bring any yacht into any space.

Sample Itinerary

10am –We’ll start the day by discussing which areas you feel you would like to improve, get an idea of your strengths and weaknesses over a cuppa and then head off!

You’ll then spend all day practising and perfecting the manoeuvres under close tutelage of our skipper, both helming and crewing for one another as you learn

·       the best techniques for manoeuvring under engine

  •        how to come alongside a pontoon
  •        how to manoeuvre yacht comfortably in tight spaces
  •       the tricks to driving yacht forwards and in reverse

4pm – end, in time for the 1615 red jet!

Additional Info

-We’ll also cover how to be the most useful member of crew when you’re not actually mooring yourself.

- How to communicate effectively without shouting!

Revision sessions on tides and tidal heights and how they affect manoeuvres.

This is a great course to introduce you to sailing and there will be plenty of time to ask questions and time to have fun as well.  As they say, once you're bitten by the sailing bug, there's no cure but a boat, plenty of ocean and fair winds!

If you are unsure what would be best for you, call our office and speak to one of our lovely team who will be able to help you out with any queries you may have!

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling it's resident population multifold.
With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.
Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do!
