What the Girls Had to Say

"The weekend was brilliant!  It was a fun and friendly group.  Our Skipper helped make the trip safe, educational and very enjoyable.  I sent all the photos I took to everyone on board via email and, oh yeah did anyone mention dancing on tables at the aptly named Folly Inn? You were right, it was a great weekend with nice people.'  Ann, September 2008

Starts: 7.30pm, Friday @ the GFS office

Finishes: 4pm, Monday, Cowes

About The Event

These events are ideal for both absolute beginners and those who want to just get away with a good fun crowd.

Your skipper is RYA qualified and you can take advantage of her knowledge, either learning the basics of sailing, wind awareness, parts of the boat and of course how to sail it or concentrating on particular areas you wish to practice!  You can be as involved as you wish, whether taking the helm, changing a sail, pulling on a few sheets or simply sitting back and enjoying the atmosphere!

We will gently cruise around the quaint and lively parts of the south coast taking in the atmosphere.  The itinerary will depend on the wind and tide and on where you would like to go.

Whatever we do we ensure you'll be safe and have fun.  Why not get a gang of friends together and have some time together?

Other Activities

In the evening there is usually a chance to go ashore to explore some of the beautiful villages and towns around the South Coast and Isle of Wight.

We might spend the night discovering how the tiny village of Cowes reinvents itself after dark to become a hive of activity. The pubs and restaurants are excellent!

The Boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

What's included?

  • Exclusive use of yacht
  • Professional RYA qualified Skipper
  • Mooring fees
  • Half board food (All breakfasts & lunches)
  • FUN! FUN! FUN!

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival

After a safety brief we slip the lines and set sail for Lymington, a beautiful seaside town situated in the New Forest. On route and in the safe hands of one of our RYA skippers, you'll have plenty of opportunity to be as hands-on...or off! as you like. Dinner that evening might be in one of the many fine pubs and eateries in Lymington, recounting the day's events over a glass or two of something!

Day 2 -

On the Sunday we'll enjoy a leisurely sail to beautiful Beaulieu for lunch before heading to Ocean Village in Southampton later that afternoon. A more metropolitan location than your previous evening, tonight will be the perfect opportunity to experience some of the lively bars and restaurants overlooking the city marina - the perfect spot for a well-earned sundowner!

Day 3 -

This morning we'll head to the beautiful nature reserve of Newtown Creek and drop the anchor for a peaceful lunch on deck - hopefully in the company of a few of the resident seals! The afternoon will see us catching the flood tide for a downwind sail back to Cowes in time for a quick scrub down before leaving the boat.
