Yachtmaster Internship

This is a unique opportunity to join a professional sailing school as a junior member of the team, learning as you go so that approximately 12-18 months later, you are a qualified Instructor and can start working full time*

About The Role

Girls For Sail is seeking a competent, hardworking, presentable, enthusiastic person to work as an intern in order to qualify as one of our full time Sailing Instructors with commercial endorsement.  Ideally you will have some previous sailing experience either yachting or dinghy sailing. We are able to take an apprentice at any level of experience from beginner to Yachtmaster/ Coastal Skipper - the only difference in the programme will be the length of time it takes to become an instructor. Ideally from a dinghy sailing/racing background, you will be looking to build your experience as a skipper in charge of your own yacht for Girls For Sail as we race/cruise our yacht around the UK Mediterranean & Caribbean areas and enjoy an exciting race programme.

What we need

YOU will be competent, reliable and flexible, dedicated and never give up. Sailing can be tough. It's not all parties and events! Your duties will include maintenance of our yachts to MCA/RYA standards so you must be prepared to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in! You will also have Meet & Greet duties  as well as Boat Preparation duties. You must be flexible and able to solve problems as they arise. You should be quick thinking and practical and willing to get stuck in to any task. As a qualified instructor you must be mentally astute & medically fit as pre-requisites to gaining your commercial endorsement. Above all you must be an absolute professional.  Attitude is more important to us than qualifications, we only want hard working, enthusisatic and dedicated candidates! If you think you have what it takes then join our team!

What we do for our Interns:

We need more female skippers in the future! At GFS we are the largest and most respected female-only sailing school in the world, established since 1999. We specialise in coaching to get the best out of our students, skills which we teach to our instructors as well as how to look after yachts and people the GFS way. It's twice as hard to be taken seriously as a girl and we have acres of experience about how to ensure you are taken seriously. You will work under the close guidance of the Operations manager who will look after your schedule liaising with the GFS Yachtmaster Instructors & Cruising Instructors, monitored by the Principal of the school. The ultimate objective will be to ensure you become a GFS instructor who is calm, knowledgeable and qualified to undertaken the exciting programme Girls For Sail is delighted to deliver to hundreds of women around the globe.

We start by discussing your experience to date and then agreeing a timeframe and specific RYA/other dates when you acquire your certification.

How you benefit/why GFS

We care about you personally. You will be looked after and mentored primarily by our qualified Cruising Instructors and previous apprentices but ultimately the Principal will ensure you progress.

You get hands-on experience. It's still a whole lot harder for ladies to get into the industry. We understand this. You will have been ultimately responsible for a 40.7 foot yacht under many conditions and will have experienced being the second in command on RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper.

You will know all about yachts by the end of the programme. This means wherever you take your qualification you will speak with confidence about every part of a yacht from its sails (and how to look after them) to rudder bearings to engines - you will be learning about the yacht you stay on and learning how to maintain them to be safe.

Accommodation is provided onboard during courses in both the Caribbean and in Cowes but we do not provide onshore accommodation. If you don't live locally we can provide a list of recommended places to stay in the Cowes area.

The outline plan:

Jan - Apr             UK based - RYA courses, Maintenance, Theory & on shore management of yachts to code.

May                      Antigua, Bermuda, Atlantic crossing to Cowes (TBC or fly to UK)

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.

The boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 people.
