Cowes Week

Join us for Cowes Week - the most famous sailing regatta in the world!

Cowes Week has been running since 1826, attracting over 800 boats from around the globe to take part in some of the best 'round the cans' racing held in the challenging waters of the Solent over 8 days in August every year.

The 8,500 competitors taking part in the event range from weekend sailors to Olympic and world class professionals racing on anything from dinghies to 100 foot super maxis. More than 100,000 spectators flock to Cowes, keen to watch the sailing, enjoy the legendary parties and soak up the unique atmosphere - this is one event that really has to be experienced!

Girls for Sail has been taking part in Cowes Week since 1999 and this just HAS to be one of our favourite events! Not only does it take place in our home port of Cowes but the mix of racing, parties and entertainment is absolutely unbeatable - it's not hard to see why people return year on year and consider Cowes Week a must-do!

We always enter several boats into Cowes Week, meaning we can match you with other girls with a similar level of experience to ensure you get the most out of your week. Whether you're joining as an absolute newcomer to sailing, racing newbie or experienced racer - we have options to suit you!

Stuck for holiday or struggling to free up the whole week? We understand not everyone can afford to escape the daily grind to come and play for the full eight days...so we also offer lots of different options to come and join us - there is no excuse for you not coming to race with us this Cowes Week!

Option 1: Cowes Week - The Full Monty (8 days, with spinnaker)

Join us for the whole week of racing and experience the very best that Cowes Week has to offer. Being able to race with the same team for the whole week gives us our best chance of doing really well, as you'll get to train and race together and see how much you improve as the week goes on...assuming you manage to not overdo it partying every evening that is!

It's the perfect option whether you're relatively new to racing or are looking to be as competitive as possible - be warned though, you'll need plenty of stamina with racing every day (we train on the first day) and parties and live entertainment every night! The spectacular fireworks display on the Friday night is the perfect way to round off the week too!

Option 2: Cowes Week (no spinnaker)

New to racing, not much sailing experience or just looking for a more relaxed time on the race course? Then join us for a full week of racing in the more relaxed, non-spinnaker class and fully experience the excitement of Cowes Week in a great supportive environment! By not racing with a spinnaker (the giant, often brightly coloured sail used for downwind sailing) we'll have plenty of time to focus on getting to grips with the basics such as sail trim, sail changes and mark rounding.

Expect to see a definite improvement in our performance as the week goes on - racing together as a team for the whole week will really help us perfect our skills! And don't forget the after-racing entertainment too when we'll get chance to meet up with the other GFS crews and swap stories of the day's racing, as well as meet the other race teams in our class!

Option 3: Cowes Week - First Half (4 days)

Join us for the first half of Cowes Week - perfect if you're new to racing or sailing - or if you're short of holiday as you'll only miss two days away from the office or family! We spend the Friday training, followed by three full days of racing - so this option is great if you're worried about not having enough experience to join us. With everyone feeling fresh and full of energy, the entertainment on the Saturday night often draws some of the biggest crowds too so you can be guaranteed some fantastic post-race partying!

Option 4: Cowes Week - Second Half (4 days)

Joining us for the second half is the ideal option for girls who want to race hard and party even harder! By this point in the week we'll know which are the boats to beat and our sights will be set firmly on trying to improve our race position and finish the week on a high.

With Ladies Day on the Tuesday and spot prizes on offer throughout the week, as well as an awards do in the evenings, this is our chance to shine both on and off the water!

Option 5: Cowes Week - Individual Days

We also reserve one place every day for girls who can't join us for longer or who are new to sailing or racing and want to see what all the fuss about Cowes Week is about! Just be prepared for the day to pass in a bit of a blur of excitement if this is your first time on a boat!

Day places are strictly limited - so email us now if you're interested in this option.

Why race Cowes Week with Girls for Sail?

We absolutely LOVE introducing women (of all ages!) to racing and as we always look after you both on and off the water, our events are perfect for girls coming on their own as well as with friends or family. In fact many of our customers go on to book events with girls they've met and made friends with on one of our previous races!

We have three golden rules:

  1. No shouting!
  2. There's no such thing as a silly question (we were all beginners ourselves at some point and know how intimidating it can be to feel like the least experienced person on board)
  3. We operate as a team and always look after each other

We'd really love you to come and race with us this Cowes Week and find out why we think this is one of the best events in the calendar! Please do get in touch with us if you have any questions or would like to discuss the best option for joining us.
