UK Racing

Come racing with Girls for Sail in the UK!

"I've really enjoyed sailing with GFS and have learnt so much - I never would have had the confidence to give racing a go if Sophie hadn't suggested it on the Day Skipper week, and now I think I'm hooked! It's been brilliant to have the opportunity to move around the boat learning the different positions and has also been wonderful to meet so many amazing women. I'm sure I'll be back at some point for some more racing or training." Nia, Hamble Winter Series, 2015

The UK quite rightly has a reputation for having some of the best race events in the world...even a non-sailor will probably have heard of Cowes Week!

But there is so much more than just Cowes Week - and Girls for Sail takes part in pretty much ALL the major races and regattas that take place along the south coast!

Whether your lifelong ambition is to experience round the cans racing in Cowes Week, the world's biggest sailing regatta (and the UK's fourth largest spectator event); or whether you're a complete newbie to sailing but like the idea of a day-long intro to racing - we have LOTS of options!!

Join us for Dartmouth Week and experience some of the best racing the south-west has to offer, or join us for a qualifying, longer, offshore race (or the whole campaign!) for the infamous Rolex Fastnet Race which takes place biannually on odd years only. For the really big events like Cowes Week, we often enter more than one race boat, so whether you're new to racing or are an out-and-out competitor you can be sure to find the right crew to race alongside!

We split our race events into two categories: Inshore and Offshore - both are equally suitable for beginners through to experienced racers, though we do recommend spending at least a weekend on board a yacht before signing up to an offshore race so you know for definite that you enjoy sailing before the starting gun fires!

Have a look at all our UK events and see what takes your fancy...and do get in touch if you'd like any suggestions or have questions about any of the events listed here!

Many of our inshore events are suitable for complete beginners as we often include a day of training before the race starts - but we do usually suggest that you'll get more out of an event if you've spent a couple of days sailing with us first on one of our Beginner weekends.

Offshore Racing Events

"The opportunity to develop our own offshore racing skills on the Fastnet race, including hours at the helm if we wanted it, was a truly unique experience that completely sets GFS apart from the competition." Jemma 2015

Caught the racing bug and want to challenge yourself further? Why not join us on one of the many offshore races we take part in every year - ranging from two day 'JOG' (Junior Offshore Group) races perfect for newbie offshore racers, right the way through to the infamous biannual Rolex Fastnet Race - considered by many to be the holy grail of offshore races and a 600 mile sprint (or sometimes float!) to the Fastnet Rock off the southern coast of Ireland.

You don't need to be an experienced racer to join an offshore event with us - but some races such as the Fastnet do require you to have completed a certain number of qualifying passages first. We enter all the qualifying RORC races every year, whether it's a Fastnet year or not - so this is an ideal way for you to gain offshore racing experience if you're new to it!  For other, shorter races we just encourage you to have some sailing experience before signing up for an offshore race so you have some idea of what to expect and have ideally sailed at night before.

UK Offshore Race Events

The Royal Ocean Racing Club ("RORC") run some amazing races both here in the UK and in the Caribbean during the winter months. Here are some our favourites, many of which are also qualifying races for the bi-annual Fastnet race (next one 2017!) which is one of the most infamous offshore races in the world:

The Junior Offshore Group (JOG) was established in 1950 to enable smaller yachts to compete offshore - they organise a full programme of both inshore and offshore racing throughout the season with lively, friendly parties held at the end of almost every race at the host port. These events are brilliant for beginners to racing!

Plus, if you book a Sail Trimming and Spinnaker Training weekend we'll discount the price of your race event by £50!
