We've been introducing complete beginners to the joys of sailing and racing since 1999 - and picking up lots of shiny trophies along the way!
Think yacht racing is only for die-hard guys who revel in chopping their toothbrush in half to save weight, going without a shower for days on end and living on re-hydrated chilli con carne eaten directly from the packet with a spork? Then think again! So ok, on some of our longer race events (the Rolex Fastnet, the ARC) showering options might be limited (but who doesn't secretly love the idea of not having to do battle with the hairdryer and going make up free for a week or two?) but on all our events and courses, we put as much emphasis on good food and creature comforts as we do on the racing - and even offer shoreside accommodation upgrades on some events!
And the best part is that you absolutely don't need to have any previous racing experience to join most of our race events and regattas - in some cases you don't even need any previous sailing experience whatsoever. Oh and did we mention that racing with an ALL-FEMALE crew means you get to do everything on board the yacht and not find yourself being elbowed out of the way just because you're a woman and 'not as strong' as the average bloke?
Learning to race with Girls for Sail is brilliant fun - we never shout (golden rule number one!) so you'll find yourself in a relaxed, supportive environment where we teach that great technique will more than make up for muscle-power any day! What's more, if you're relaxed and enjoying yourself, you'll find yourself picking things up far quicker than being constantly worried about making a mistake or not knowing exactly what to do.
We offer race options from one day through to a month, as well as race training, sail trimming and spinnaker training weekends - and on most of our events we include at least a day of pre-race training meaning you can join as a beginner and not feel completely out of your depth. In some of our bigger events, we often enter two or three yachts, meaning we can also group ladies of a similar level of ability together, allowing more experienced racers to be more competitive on the race course and enabling less experienced sailors and racers to have plenty of opportunity to learn without feeling out of your comfort zone.
Girls for Sail has been racing in the UK and the Caribbean for over 15 years with some brilliant results and completely novice, all-female crews - including winning Antigua Race week and Cork week classes.
We have a professional race skipper on board for all our races - they are there to keep you safe, provide some first class coaching - and give us the best chance as an all-female team of competing against mixed or all-male crews!
We split our race events into two categories: Inshore and Offshore - both are equally suitable for beginners through to experienced racers, though we do recommend spending at least a weekend on board a yacht before signing up to an offshore race so you know for definite that you enjoy sailing before the starting gun fires!
